About

Crown Heights Co-operative Home Inc. is a 118 unit townhouse complex located in Thornhill, Ontario. The Co-op consists of three and four bedroom units along with 2 partially accessible units. On premise there is also a multi-functional Community recreation center,  and 2 visitor parking lots.

Crown Heights Co-op was incorporated in 1983 and members began to take occupancy in 1984. Crown Heights Co-op is located near Bathurst and Clark, close to many amenities and a short walk from the Chabad Gate Plaza, the Chabad Lubavitch Community Centre and the Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto (BAYT) synagogue.

The co-operative is governed under the Co-operative Corporations Act, therefore the residents are members, not tenants. The members of Crown Heights elect 9 of its members to serve as the Board of Directors, whose job is to govern the cooperation. Board members are comprised of members who live in the co-op who are voted on the board by the members at the AGM (annual general meeting) once per year. All members of the Co-op have a right to vote and take part in governing their community. The membership meets at least twice per year. The members also meet to approve budgets and receive the audited financial statements. Members are encouraged to get involved with the Board of Directors and Committees in order to become leaders of their community. Members take ownership of the Co-op to develop a truly democratic and diverse community which meets their own needs and expectations.

The Board delegates many of the responsibilities to the property manager who is hired directly by the co-op to manage the property.
